In my opinion, I think that the advance in technology had change the way we consume technology. Everything in our human life had change because the existence of new type technology. Advanced technology is a tool that helping us makes life easier to live. But, I also believe that the technology is weakening us. Just look around you and see, everything that you use involve technology and I can’t imagine if the world without internet or other technologies.
Mind blowing! Watching the video on how things have changed and will change rapidly with technology really amaze me. Technology is and has been the scientific knowledge to solve practical problem(s). Basically it is how we are going to use the technology. Use it wisely, it gives you benefit(s), otherwise it will bring you harm. The question here is, in what way does the technology is beneficial and harmful?
The birth of smartphones has undeniably benefit us all in a way that it connects us efficiently, with speed and wherever we go. Well, quoting from De Waele (2014), children in Africa have access for more information compared to the President of the United States fifteen years back. Not only does smart phones connect us all, it also has built-in applications that seemed impossible more than a decade ago. In example, tonight’s going out app, an application that works as events searcher and we can start inviting people with one’s fingertips. How cool is that?
However, in my opinion, the best example on how technology has cause harm would be the number of companies that were not listed in Fortune 500 after a decade just because the companies were unable to cop with these changes in technology in which according to De Waele (2014), they basically disappear and got out of the business for good. For instance, Kodak went bankrupt in 2005 after making an evaluation over 280 billion in 1999. Also, I second De Waele’s statement on how the Google glass is a distracting piece of technology. This was shown towards the end of the video where a surgeon performing surgery while having a question and answer session with a group of students. I mean, not everyone has the ability to multitask.
Truthfully, despite the harm, technology today has made life easier.
Technology has indeed revolutionized life and the way things are being done. It eases everything. Now, we can buy things within a click of a finger, keep track of our calories intake, share files worldwide, and stream live concert on the other side of the world. The lists are endless. What I like the most from the Shift 2020 video is the KhanApp. An app that offers free education to its users. Availability of free academic information would allow users to explore and gain limitless knowledge related to their interest fields. Imagine the possibility of free access to journal, ebook and academic references, such app would certainly benefited teachers and students. The thing is technology is similar to Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, within one body there are good and bad. So to entirely blame technology for making us less human, is illogic because mankind themselves invented technology on the first place. The downside of technology is that people abused it to gain some personal gratifications which harm others. There are a few numbers of fake apps (Netflix for instance) that cause virus infection and steals account information. It is purposely made to scam its user for monetary gain. Public shaming in social media, piracy, and invasion of privacy are all by products of technology.
Pada hemat saya, manusia lebih berkeinginan kepada teknologi itu sendiri. Manusia mencipta peralatan teknologi untuk bergantung kepada teknologi bagi memudahkan rutin seharian sekaligus mempengaruhi gaya hidup serta perlakuan. Hal ini secara langsung turut mempengaruhi perhubungan antara manusia yang memberi impak tersendiri setelah munculnya media baharu. Misalnya, kewujudan media baharu seperti Skype, hubungan jarak jauh boleh dikatakan tidak lagi terhalang dalam menghubungkan manusia melalui cara televideo. Namun, fakta ataupun berita akan mudah dipesongkan kesahihannya melalui media baharu seperti Facebook dan Twitter. Justeru, kemunculan pelbagai peralatan teknologi dan juga media baharu, masyarakat akan lebih mudah untuk mendapatkan maklumat namun perlu bijak untuk memanfaatkan penggunaannya.
Teknologi dicipta bagi memudahkan aktiviti seharian manusia. 'Vendor Machine' digunakan untuk manusia mendapatkan minuman dan makanan dengan mudah. Begitu juga dengan mesin bagi menambahkan kredit (topup). Teknologi membantu memudahkan urusan seharian manusia.
Teknologi yang lahir pada masa kini ternyata bertujuan memudahkan kehidupan manusia. kelahiran pelbagai teknologi juga disebabkan pelbagai sebab. Walaupun ada yang bakal terkesan disebabkan penggunaan teknologi secara optima yang mampu mempengaruhi peluang pekerjaan kepada manusia, namun kita harus menerimanya dengan cara yang positif. kecanggihan yang ada pada masa kini ternyata menakjubkan dan setanding dengan angan-angan yang mimikkan seperti dalam filem-filem dan drama yang mengilhamkan penghasilan teknologi tersebut sehingga melahirkannya ke alam realiti. sebagai pengamal media juga, ianya secara tidak langsung meletakkan media kepada satu fasa baharu yang lebih baik dari segi penyebaran dan penyaluran maklumat.
Talk is cheap. Shift 2020 is nothing more than a make-believe timeframe where everything is at its peak. Just like the Mayan Apocalypse Myths in 2012 or Vision 2020 by the Malaysian government, these are just blind faith to meet humans’ imagination. As put forth at the end of the presentation, new technological advancement will only progress through consistent and concrete efforts. Breakthrough is only possible at the expense of pushing boundaries and the future of human civilization is in no excuse at the limit of time.
