  1. After i watch the video, I can see the positive and negative contribution for the citizen journalist.
    1. Positive contribution are the authority will lost their power to cover or hide some news/ story from the people. People has the right to know everything. Remember the quotes" if the story not told, question will not ask, the power will not get challenge". So, I think this citizen journalist can be the watch dog to monitor the media system in their country. Reader or the people will have more chance to consume more story, news, or information from multiple channels.
    2. But, it also can create negative contribution. Because different people view thing in different way, we interpret or judge thing based on our own perspective which influence by our own culture. So, there will be more than one side of the comment or news, and this can create conflict when some of the people agree or not agree with what they have read. There is no standardized for the news content, everyone just write what ever that they think is correct. The words that they used can be bias, harsh, not appropriate or can offend the reader. It can create chaos!
    3. I rate it as more good than bad. But, it still need to depend on how mature the citizen journalist is?
    4. Citizen journalist is different compare to traditional one because they are free in term of freedom and free of charge. They can write whatever they want, in their own ways and they no need to scare about the authority or the head of department (chief editor). Citizen journalist job are more fun than traditional one. There is no rule in Citizen journalism, u are the rule, except for akta fitnah dan ajta hasutan la. But, if in traditional one, you have to obey the office rule, government rule, your boss RULE! So, In Malaysia, i support citizen journalism. We have the right to know everything, because we are the one that run our country!

  2. From Occupy Wall Street to Occupy Central, citizen journalism has taken charge over the new media around the globe. Everyone with the access to the Internet can contribution to this sensationalism individual standpoint. This phenomenon has created an unprecedented demand for online connectivity. As such, Google has initiated Project Loon and is expected to shovel in $10 Billion every year. This project aims to tap the market of 4.5 billion people who have no access to Internet.
Henceforth, we can soon surmise the accessibility of Internet coverage will surpass the accessibility of clean water in Africa. Humanity issues put aside, try imagining 7 billion people on earth is connected to one virtual online world. Sounds empowering doesn’t it? But what is really frightening is the prospect of arising social conflicts as a consequence. If citizen journalism is already a concern now, what will happen by then?
The truth is citizen journalism is changing the entire political, economical and geographical landscape of our generation. The voice of ordinary citizens is now echoed throughout the web. Framed news on the mainstream media is deemed irrelevant to the interest and issues of the public. Because protesting and demonstrating is not the only solution, people are starting to get organized, run their own workplaces and communities. Instead of being exploited by mass production and consumption, activists are starting to take control over their life. Citizen journalism provides a platform to cast light to various minority issues, challenging the establishment of structures and overriding the approach to existing paradigms.
In the book “The Future of Quality News Journalism: A Cross-Continental Analysis”, Anderson, Williams, & Ogola (2013) illustrated the financial struggles of quality news journalism in this confrontational digital age. In fact not all citizen journalists are properly educated or trained in terms of producing ethical and professional reports. For instance, news spreads almost instantaneously on Twitter without ample source and evidence. On the bright side, this will eliminate the case of agenda setting and priming of particular news to the benefits of certain news agency. Although citizen journalism propel towards anarcho-syndicalism, direct democracy and liquid democracy, the trend of mobile journalism may give rise to information overload.
In short, citizen journalism is inevitable in this era of technological determinism. Since citizen journalism will only be a mere reflection on current social problems, the current establishment must evolve to the social changes or otherwise will be eliminated.

  4. Citizen journalism is a platform when the voices of the betrayed, oppressed and the week has been violated and silence. It is a form of freedom of speech. Every has the right to voice out or speak something regarding what matters to them.

The Ferguson case really showed a true impact. The picture of a police killing a black man was posted in twitter then became viral. Yes, it was a hate crime and there is always 2 sides of the story. The media was on the police side while the rest of the world became angry. Why were they angry? It was not just about a white men killing a black man. It was about injustice. It was about the trurth being hidden and buried my local power, local authority.

That is when citizen journalism come in hand. The power of the people channeled through social networking sites, building up rage and fueling more on the fire.

Who has the right to say citizen journalism is positive? Who is to say it is negative?

  5. by Mahirah Abdul Rahman

The domination of media owners (with certain interests) in traditional mass media like television and newspaper have lead to a growing number of citizen journalists. Citizen journalist usually cover issues that are rarely discussed in main media. This is my opinion, bring more colours to current journalism scene because these people (citizen journalists) bring along their new perspective and arguments. But some argue on the validity of the stories produced, intention and lack of solid evidence by these citizen journalists. Their arguments, although may not be reliable and lack of validity, is to ponder upon. To sum up, there is always the good and the bad, so we rational human being eventually have to decide whether to support or against it. Citizen journalism.

  6. The concept of citizen journalism is based upon public citizens playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and information. Citizen journalism should not be confused with community journalism or civic journalism, both of which are practiced by professional journalists. Citizen journalism is a specific form of both citizen media and user generated content.

New media technology, such as social networking and media-sharing websites, in addition to the increasing prevalence of cellular phones, have made citizen journalism more accessible to people worldwide. Due to the availability of technology, citizens can often report breaking news more quickly than traditional media reporters. But then again, how worthy the news is depends on how people define it. Some people may believe it but some chose to believe what would be reported then by the authority. The question is, how true can the authority be?

  9. citizen journalism? here are he simplified version of the answers to the questions

    1. Positive side?
it could help unveiled any misconduct that are happening around us, like a watchdog.

    2. Negative?
In this aspect, it is more negativity rather than positive when weighting out the outcome. Power of the people? forget that, an unauthorized citizen journalist could simply exaggerating issue(s), spreading rumors like what has been happening right now. the primary criminal that kills the good name of the citizen journalist would be the social media, what happened and what has been reported may be differ or just a stretch of lies or truth.
It is a hard task for the citizen journalist to overcome the issues and the main priority is for them to be ethical in the first place?
